Bristol’s best Pubs

Top Bristol Pubs: Where Locals Love to Linger!

Who doesn’t like a traditional pub? They’re part of British culture – so much so, they’re now woven into the fabric of daily life (and have been for hundreds of years). In fact, it was the Roman invasion that introduced the concept of the public house to our region.

It might have taken a while (say, a few centuries) for the pub as we know it to come to fruition, but in that time, they’ve become so much more than simply a house serving ale.

Throughout time, they’ve served as places of business, social reform, diversion and in the absence of the printing press, even as the local news.

Luckily for Bristolians, the city isn’t short on traditional Bristol pubs, many of which also serve delicious food and fabulous ales. Here are just a few of Bristol’s first and foremost pubs.

Bristol’s Oldest Pubs

There’s some debate over the title for oldest pub in the city, with several contenders vying for first place.

The Hatchet Inn, claiming establishment around 1606, takes its name from the woodsmen of Clifton Wood.

It’s stood the test of time, and now offers a range of delicious pub grub, as well as a tasty pint.

Another contender for the title is the Llandoger Trow, built in 1664. With its stunning Tudor exterior set on the sunny cobbled street in the heart of the city, it’s a great option for those warm, summer days.

The Bristol pub is also steeped in history; legend has it that the Llandoger Trow was a favorite drinking spot for the infamous privateer Blackbeard, as well as the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.

A third contender for the title is The Rummer, just off of St Nick’s Market. Dating back to 1241, The Rummer’s flagstone floors and huge fireplace act as visible reminders of the pub’s longstanding history.

It now boasts its own micro distillery, brewing batches of aromatic gins and spiced rums that you can sample in the bar (along with a plethora of other spirits).

The Steam Crane

This Bristol Pub is located south of the river in Bedminster, The Steam Crane is pretty hard to miss.

The building's exterior features a classic nautical scene painting, and inside, it combines traditional pub decor with a touch of modernism.

Leather armchairs somehow blend seamlessly with the traditional fireplaces and wooden bar that you’d expect from a traditional British pub.

There’s a wide variety of beer, ales and wine available, and the food comes highly recommended by locals and visitors alike.

It’s great for larger groups, so if you’re planning a Bristol stag weekend, then the Stream Crane is a great place to start your celebrations.

The Albion, Clifton

The Albion, a stylish twist on the traditional British pub, is a popular spot in the lively Clifton village.

Dating back to the 17th Century, experts have meticulously renovated and designed the building with impeccable taste.

It’s a winner for all seasons; lazy summer afternoons fly by in the ample courtyard garden, while winter Sunday lunches have to be experienced by the comfort of a roaring fire and accompanied by a delicious glass of red.

The Albion may not be budget-friendly, but it's a must-visit for those seeking a more upscale spot to enjoy their pint.

The food menu is seasonal, the ingredients impeccable quality and the dishes, reassuringly traditional. There’s literally something for everyone, one of our favourite Bristol pubs.

bristol pubs

The Jersey Lily

As far as Bristol pubs go, The Jersey Lily is young, fun and full of character. Situated on lively Whiteladies Road, the pub enjoys a relaxed atmosphere, which attracts a mixed – yet equally welcome – crowd.

The food is award-winning; sourced from local suppliers, you can sink your teeth into a huge variety of scrumptious snacks and dinners.

From tapas to share to Sunday Roasts, there’s literally something for everyone on their extensive menu. If you’re more interested in the drinks menu, then you won’t be disappointed.

There’s a huge selection of wines for all tastes on offer – as well as cocktails. If you're into live music, don't miss the Thursday acoustic sessions. Enjoy two-for-one craft cocktails with a friend!

the ostrich bristol pub

The Ostrich

The Ostrich, a historic Bristol pub, sits in a fantastic location right on the water's edge with a great beer garden!

On a sunny day, everyone packs the place, taking advantage of the sun-drenched benches to watch the boats sail lazily by.

Visit the charming, centuries-old pub and don't miss the skeleton in the cave near the bar while waiting for your pint.

Is Bristol the best city in the UK?

Bristol : The Best City In The UK: Why The Surprise?

In March 2017 Bristol was awarded first place in the Sunday Times ‘Best place to live’ Guide. And now the announcement is ‘old news’, I feel safe to vocalise my surprise at, well, the surprise.

Seven years ago, before I moved to the city, I may have been among those raising an eyebrow over Bristol’s new accolade. I’ve lived in several of the country’s bustling cosmopolitan hubs, as well as some of the more rural spots, and wasn’t that impressed with either end of the spectrum.

But having spent some time getting to know Bristol and all it has to offer, it’s no wonder to me that it keeps coming up trumps. And in my humble opinion, here are the reasons why.

The History Of Bristol

Bristol is steeped in history, much of which is still tangible to this day. From the 12th Century Temple Church, to the SS Great Britain and even the labyrinth of caves in Redcliffe, Bristol’s past fuses seamlessly with its modern-day vibe.

The city can even boast an array of famous former occupants, such as the notorious Edward Teach (otherwise known as Blackbeard), Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and even the elusive street artist Banksy.

Bristol's Food Scene

From the North to the South of the river, Bristol is home to hundreds of award-winning restaurants and cafes to sate all appetites. Every meal is more-than catered for ten times over; try a healthy breakfast of smashed avocados and poached egg at Primrose Café, or a less-healthy all-you-can-drink Prosecco brunch at Brace & Browns.

If you’ve time for lunch, you could do much worse than the Burger Joint in Bedminster, before a first-rate dinner at the Pony and Trap. (It’s a few miles out of Bristol, but the food is first-rate and the scenic views of the Somerset countryside are stunning).

Even the much-loved chains you expect to encounter in a city are situated on water fronts or in beautiful period buildings. If you can handle a cocktail or two, the covert, speak-easy themed Milk Thistle has some of the best mixes in the city – a city, by the way, famed for its love of gin.

Activities Available In Bristol

There are so many Bristol activities, no audience is excluded and there’s literally something for every event. Water babies can take to the river for a cruise on the Avon, or even try their hand at paddle boarding.

Young families can spend a day at @Bristol, guaranteed to educate all and keep the kids entertained for hours. Those looking for a romantic evening can wander through the quaint, picturesque streets of Clifton before an intimate meal at one of the many restaurants (or enjoy a cocktail or two by candlelight).

Large groups can make the most of Bristol’s extensive range of bars and clubs, but it doesn’t have to end there: Groups of grown-ups (stags and hens included) wanting a west-country themed day out need look no further than West Country Games. Welly throwing, Drunk Pub Skittles and Pitchfork Duels are only a few of the crazy games that are guaranteed to bring people together and create memories that’ll last a lifetime.

Location, Location, Location

In short, what isn’t on Bristol’s doorstep? The city is well situated to offer some of the best of Britain. Take a short (less then two hours) drive south and you’re in Devon, home to seaside towns such as Sidmouth and Lime Regis, perfect boltholes for romantic weekends away, or a wonderful family day out.

London is easy to reach by car or train – the latter only taking about an hour and a half. If you’re looking to go further afield, Bristol airport charters flights to Edinburgh, the continent and even as the USA.

There are so many reasons why Bristol is an incredible place to live. Furthermore, future plans to improve Bristol will only fuel the love for the city, which residents – and visitors alike – find hard to contend.

Choosing Company team building activities in Bristol

Team building in Bristol is not an uncommon activity. These exercises can help groups improve their skills; particularly those of problem solving and leadership. It is highly recommended that all workplaces, no matter their size, partake in some kind of team building or team activity every year – preferably several times a year.

This is because team building can help to build healthy relationships between individuals who work together, but it can also weed out any discourse that may not usually be visible during the working day. The activities that are involved in team building are vital for improving workplace relationships and helping workers figure out each other’s strengths. There are no weaknesses, only learning opportunities and ways to help one another.

When choosing your team building activities in Bristol, a team leader or manager has several points to consider before booking or cementing any days out.

bristol team activities

Organising your team day out

Organisers should recognize that there needs to be some kind of outcome that comes from the Bristol team building activities. There is little point in setting a team out into the “wild” without a plan in mind. Even if that plan is as simple as getting your team to talk more or helping them release some stress in a fun or creative way. Your team will be wondering what the point of it all is; have an answer for them.

Consider your demographic, as well. If you have a younger team, they’re more likely to enjoy exciting and thrilling activities or days out; whilst older team members may prefer conferences with a few benefits attached. But these are all pretty common ideas with one single flaw: they don’t promote team effort. Any member of your team could easily separate themselves, or the larger group could split up into friendship cliques – and every age group has those.

West Country Games includes everyone

How do you stop that from happening, you ask? Consider activities that make your team members into a team outside of work. Sporting activities, races, challenges, make sure you incorporate things that people of all ages in your team can participate in, too.

In addition, take into account the health of your team and try to incorporate games that even those who aren’t completely able-bodied or in good health can still join. No one should be left behind if they choose to sign up to your team building event.

Fun Team Activities

Now that you’ve got a plan of action, it’s time to find an event or a suitable company who offer team building events. For Bristol team building, try West Country Games! West Country Games is the collision of ideas between two childhood friends who want to invite others to get back to the basic enjoyments of childhood: running around in the fields and trying to get the best of one another.

West Country Games is a fun activity company that creates games which are suitable for those who want to interact with each other. It’s all about having fun, with no pressure attached, and making sure that anyone of any ability can join in.

The company currently have nine games that can be played by your employees. Three of them are outlined below, so that you can get a rough idea of the craziness your desk-bound workers can get up to if you believe they need a little escape for a while. Who doesn’t love beating a colleague with a giant blow-up baton and trying to get them to fall over, after all?

Fun Team Activities

That first game we’ve thrown in there is “Pitchfork Duel”, a game that West Country Games is positive will sort out any lingering disagreements or grievances about who ate the last chocolate digestive.

Our second game choice is the “West Country Wipeout”, a hectic team building activity that gets everyone involved.  Dodge the pedal powered Badger themed sweeper arm as your colleague tries to knock you down. Harder than it sounds!

For number three, try your hand at throwing a welly boot at a target. “Welly Wanging” is sure to get the competitive spirit going! A classic team building in Bristol game, keeping a tradition alive.

Bristol Go Karting History

Go karting is a sport in its own right but is also a popular commercialised activity and comes in a variety of types including mini sports cars, open-wheeled cars, quadracycles, non-motorised karts and high-performance drag racing karts.

Originally invested by the company Art Ingels back in 1956, go karts originated in Los Angeles but is now a go-to pastime and occasional activity worldwide.

Traditionally, small two-stroke and four-strokes internal combustion engines are used in the motorised varieties of go karts, with power transmitted from the engine to the rear axle by way of a chain or belt.

These are often air-cooled engines and are manufactured by well-known motor producers such as Yamaha, Aixro, Biland and KTM. Most such engines are built to design and are intended only for go kart usage.

Of course, given society’s continued increasing appetite toward greener alternatives for non-sustainable vehicles, there are now a number of electric go karts available: and these tend to be the ones found at commercialised go kart centres and tracks.

As such models are pollution-free and don’t emit any smoke or toxins, they’re ideal for indoor usage and so work well for amusement parks and indoor electricity centres. Generally speaking, these are powered by lead-acid batteries or lithium batteries but some are fitted with hydrogen fuel cells.

Lots of electric go kart models allow for remote control, allowing a track attendant or race referee to slow or halt a kart in the event of unsafe driving or another hazard. It also makes for a great safety protocol for younger riders, widening accessibility to go karting to those of most ages.

In some countries, go karts can be used on public roads but this is not the case in the UK. In the European Union, however, they may be permitted provided they are modified for safe road use through the installation of high and low beam headlights, tail lights, indicators, an engine not exceeding 15kW and a horn.

Bristol Karting Tips

Today, go karts are primarily used for commercial enterprises, either on indoor or outdoor tracks. These are usually rented for timeslots or daily and can be used recreationally just to practice or in an informal race situation.

In most instances, users can ‘arrive and drive’ with just a short safety briefing before helmets, gloves and driver outfits are supplied and they’re left to give it a go.

Both indoor and outdoor go karting tracks can be found around the world; and for those who enjoy the experience, they can choose to take the hobby a little more seriously and work their way up to the Indoor Karting World Championship (IKWC) to compete!

Go karting in Bristol is popular amongst both those looking to pass a few hours and those celebrating a big birthday, hen do, stag do or other occasion.

There’s a great variety of venues throughout the city and if you’re looking to do some other activities alongside your attempt to go kart, Bristol makes for a great choice!

Top Picks for Go Karting in Bristol

Bristol is a great place for a break away and so is a top choice amongst those looking to celebrate an occasion or try something new. Generally speaking, when it comes to your Bristol go kart experience you’ll find two types of track: indoor and outdoor.

While not prescriptive, it’s standard for indoor tracks to be a little shorter and smaller, although they may be split across different levels. Outdoor tracks tend to be longer and wider and are usually either made up of a traditional concrete circuit or a purpose-built off-road course for added difficulty and a different type of rally practice.

Most Bristol go kart tracks are recreational, but several offer additional tuition should you wish to hone your skills and work your way up the ranks of a league.

The Best Total Wipeout Courses In The UK

The Best Total Wipeout Courses in the UK

The game show Total Wipeout debuted in 2009 and with its first episode set to change the landscape of not just this genre of television but also of hen parties, stag parties, corporate team bonding sessions and birthday occasions.

Hosted by Richard Hammond and Amanda Byram, each episode saw contestants compete in a series of challenges with the goal of winning a prize pot of £10,000. The challenges mainly involved large assault courses set in vast pools of water and/or mud, and contestants competed across four elimination rounds until just one remained; with that person claiming the money and a special Total Wipeout charity.

Choosing your Total Wipeout Course

Originally an Endemol show from the US, it was adapted for British television and speedily gained a passionate audience of viewers and was commissioned for six series including a winter-themed edition and alongside several celebrity versions. While the programme ceased in 2012, it was picked up again for re-runs in 2020 with Top Gear presenters Paddy McGuinness and Freddie Flintoff narrating over some of the most popular and shocking classic episodes in a series named Total Wipeout: Freddie and Paddy Takeover.

The fun of the show alongside the loyal following of viewers it gained had a real “I could do this!” feel-good factor for those at home on the sofa, and as a result a myriad of Total Wipeout courses based on the programme opened to glorious commercial success across the world. These courses are available for visitors of all ages to give the assault courses made famous on the show a go and are extremely popular amongst those celebrating occasions such as stag dos, hen dos and birthdays, as well as corporate team bonding and building sessions.

Total Wipeout Stages...

The first round of any Total Wipeout course is known as ‘The Qualifier’ and involves participants attempting to finish a short obstacle course in the quickest time. 20 contestants begin but the 8 with the slowest times are eliminated, so 12 remain. Obstacles in The Qualifier vary but always include the Sucker Punch, Big Balls, and a swing to the goal at the end.

A Total Wipeout course’s second stage varies, as it changed every two series throughout the show, but these were named The Sweeper, Crash Mountain, Double Cross and Ski Lift (for the special winter edition).

As the Total Wipeout course furthers and fewer contestants stay in the game, the obstacles get more difficult. Stage three again changed between series of the show but these included Dizzy Dummies, The Dreadmill, The Terror-Go-Round and Winter Blunderland (again, for the winter edition).

Wipeout Contestants

Only a few contestants (usually two or three) make it to the final round of any Total Wipeout course, The Wipeout Zone. Nicknamed ‘the toughest obstacle course in the world’, the winner must complete this section in the quickest time possible to claim the prize. Made up of five or six obstacles, this is designed specifically to be tricky and, of course, to make the best possible television.

While the show was filmed in California and Argentina, most of us don’t have quite the same budget when it comes to planning a team or friend outing. Instead, a Total Wipeout course in the UK can make for an experience everyone will remember… and you’re not likely to pick up sunburn or jet lag along the way!

Choosing your Bristol Escape Room...

Escape rooms first gained popularity in the early 00s across Asia and Europe but quickly hit commercial success across the world and spread to North America and the Middle East too.

Designed originally as family-friendly activities focused on problem-solving, they usually come in the format of a themed room or rooms that require a group of people to work together to ‘escape’.

Through the solving of a series of puzzles, the team can work through the stages of the activity and finally gain a code or method with which they can leave.

Players typically complete these tasks against the clock, often within sessions of an hour or 90 minutes. Those who manage to leave the room within the set time are declared winners. Their escape time is then displayed on a league table, compared to other groups who have participated.

In reality, escape rooms aren’t actually locked and there is usually a games-keeper on-site at all times.

If participants become ‘stuck’ on a puzzle, there’s often a method with which to feed them hints to keep the game going, and of course, if the group are unable to complete the puzzles in the time frame, the games-keeper releases them from site.

Today, there’s a variety of different types of escape room; for differing audiences and different types of gameplay. These include gameplay featuring word puzzles, substitution cyphers, riddles, Sudoku, mathematical problems, jigsaw puzzles, matchstick puzzles, chess, or searching or assembling a physical product.

The hill above the bridge has always been a gathering spot to watch the fireworks explode all across the city below.
